Teachers new to Catholic Schools - Day 2

 Content:
  1. Things we see in a church
  2. Revised Curriculum
  3. Teaching strategies/ approaches
We had the opportunity to visit Sacred Heart Catholic Church on Vermont Street where we learnt about some of the objects we will see in the church.
    • Holy water Font- allow worshippers to bless themselves when they enter and leave
    • Altar - consecrated or blessed table used for liturgies (public prayer and worship - no priest. Mass must have a priest)
    • AMBO - Podium used for the reading of scripture, leading song and delivering messages to the community/ congregation
    • Baptism Font - basin that holds water for the purposes of Baptising new members of the church
    • Candles - these remind the faithful of Christ's presence amongst us. Number of candles in a church can vary.
    • Choir Loft - the gallery from which the choir will sing
    • Credence Table - A small shelf or side table used for holding the articles used in the celebration of the Eucharist
    • Crucifix - A cross with the crucified figure of Christ on it.
    • Holy images - Pictorial works portraying the artist's image of God, Jesus, the Holy Spirit, Mar, angels and Saints
    • Pascal Candle - large Easter candle placed at the side of the altar, bearing the Greek letters for alpha and omega, symbolising God, the beginning and the end
*Genuflect - to the tabernacle where the blessed sacrament resides (a sign of reverence)
*Bow - to the altar not the tabernacle, if the tabernacle is near the tabernacle, then we genuflect
Caught a glimpse of the reviewed RE Curriculum, can't say much about it as we didn't go into much detail.
I really enjoyed the last session where we got see an RE lesson in action. Margerat took us through what a lesson could look like by integrating with drama:
  • Echo Drama (miming an action as I read, action adds on to the meaning. children repeat and mimics teacher).
  • Chorus Play - ???need to find information on this.
KEY POINT: Be intentional!!! \
Reflective question:
How do I make connection between prayer and catholic transmitting information but if there is no connection to mind, body and heart...then does it matter.
